Daily Water Intake Calculator (Rough Estimate)

This calculator produces a rough planning estimate of daily fluid intake from your body weight, activity level and climate. It is deliberately labelled an estimate, not a hydration prescription.

For most healthy adults, drinking to thirst is a reasonable strategy, and water from all drinks and food counts. People with heart failure, kidney disease or doctor-prescribed fluid restrictions must follow their clinical limits instead of this estimate.

Water intake estimator

A rough daily fluid range based on body weight and exercise — not a hydration prescription.

minutes (optional)

Nothing you enter is stored. Results are computed on request and discarded.

Methodology & references

Rough range: 30–35 ml of fluid per kg of body weight per day, plus about 350 ml per 30 minutes of exercise, adjusted slightly upward in hot or humid conditions. This heuristic is a rough estimate and does not replace EFSA/ICMR reference values, which are expressed as population averages including water from food.

Limitations

  • A very rough estimate only — hydration needs vary widely with temperature, activity and health status.
  • Never use this if you are on medically prescribed fluid restrictions.
  • The estimate counts total fluid from all beverages and food.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter your body weight and choose its unit.
  • Select your activity level and climate.
  • Press Calculate for the rough daily estimate in litres.

Understanding your result

The output is a total-fluid estimate for planning purposes. Individual needs vary widely with weather, exercise, health status and diet, and thirst is a reliable guide for most healthy people.

The estimate includes water from all beverages and food, not only plain water.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to drink exactly this much water?

No. The figure is a rough planning estimate. For most healthy adults, drinking to thirst is a reasonable strategy, and water from all beverages and food contributes.

Who should not follow this estimate?

People with heart failure, kidney disease, or any fluid restriction given by a doctor must follow their clinical team limits instead of this estimate.
