Approved indications
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used for selected bacterial infections when local susceptibility data support its use. It has no effect on colds, flu, or other viral illnesses.
Contraindications (do not use if…)
Do not take cefixime if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction to it or another cephalosporin. If you have previously had a severe reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics, let your doctor know before starting.
Important precautions
Only take cefixime when prescribed for a bacterial infection. If you have kidney disease, your dose may need adjusting. Complete the full course to help prevent antibiotic resistance.
Common side effects
Common side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, loose stools, and stomach discomfort.
Serious side effects — seek urgent medical care
Get urgent help if you develop a severe allergic reaction, bloody or persistent diarrhoea, severe skin reactions, or unusual bleeding.
Important interactions
Tell your doctor about anticoagulants such as warfarin, carbamazepine, and all other prescription or over-the-counter medicines you take. Always check product-specific interactions.
Allergy considerations
Tell your doctor about any past reactions to cephalosporins or beta-lactam antibiotics. Review product ingredients if you have known allergies.
